I think the essence of traveling is to experience the culture, and how else do you do that other than meeting the locals? You can definitely learn more and absorb more by spending some time, sharing a drink or a meal with people that live there?
I think I'm probably more on couchsurfing for the social experience rather than the surfing of couches :)
