When it comes to traveling, I prefer couch surfing because you get the most out a trip. You get the "local" version of traveling, straight from the source. As opposed to going on the Internet and finding the "top things to do". I believe that you have the opportunity to embrace and be embraced by someone who's opening their home to you.
