About Me

CURRENT MISSION

I am trying to understand and experience more of the world by spending time with the amazing diversity of people that live in it!

ABOUT ME

G'Day! My name is Fred Hayes and I'm a laid back Australia that loves to travel. I have a curious mind and love learning new things and meeting new people. I love the outdoors and being active. I completed my masters degree in London studying Sports Management working at the 2012 London Olympics. I completed my undergraduate degree in Canberra and Canada studying Behavioural Ecology. I have spent time in Costa Rica volunteering in Green and Scarlet Maccaw conservation. I also spent time in Panama where I studied fiddler crabs. I travelled overland from London to Hong Kong in 2008! This West to East voyage involved countless nights on trains (the most spectacular being the six nights on the trans-siberian from Moscow to Beijing). I then spent two weeks in Beijing for the Olympics which was amazing! Since Beijing I have spent the 2008 and 2009 - 2010 winter seasons in Whistler, Canada! I was working in the Whistler Media Center during the Olympics which was fantastic! Looking forward to more travel in the future after spending the last 18 months in London completed my Masters in Sports Management and working for the Olympics.

PHILOSOPHY

I think the world is a fantastic place and well worth exploring. Nothing is better then getting on a cramped bus, having a restless night sleep and waking up somewhere completely different with its own quirks and charms. I hope I can share the quirks and charms of the Aussie way of life with you!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I heard about the CSing project from friends who say it is fantastic and puts you into contact with some of the worlds nicest and friendliest people. I have found this to be very true! I always love meeting new people and helping out a fellow traveler. So far I have mainly surfed but once I am settled I plan to open my couch up and meet amazing people from all over the world.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I have Couchsurfed countless couches across the US and Europe! I have surfed in around 20 US States.

I made it to the 2009 North American CSing campout where I got to spend three nights with 300 other very cool CSers. Also went to my first CSing wedding there!

I couchsurfed through Europe in the summer of 2011, surfing in about ten different countries!

I have met fantastic people ever step of the way!

Interests

I like sport, particularly rock climbing, rugby, football, baseball, hockey and tennis. I also love the outdoors and try and hike regularly and get myself amongst wildlife. I love to travel and meet new people!
I love major Sporting Events and have been to four Olympic Games and two Football World Cups.

Music, Movies, and Books

I like a wide range of books and movies. I like to get stuck into all the classic novels while in the movies stakes you cannot go by a good block buster! I enjoy going to music festivals where the atmosphere is amazing. Hightlights being Glastonbury 2008 and Big Day Out in Australia.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Walked the great wall of China while in Beijing during the 2008 Olympic Games!

Taking the Trans-Siberian from Moscow to Beiiing as part of an overland trip from London to Hong Kong!

Getting to the Football World cup in South Africa and the Commonwealth Games in India. Hiking mountains in Nepal was also fantastic!

Teach, Learn, Share

To experience the world you can not stay on your own couch and watch a documentary but must get out there and stay on others couches!
