About Me
CURRENT MISSION
To see some of the world before it's too late!
ABOUT ME
I (Kelsey) am from Northeastern Connecticut, and spent a lovely 5 years in Vermont's northeast kingdom. After a couple years in West Virginia, we are now in a beautiful spot on the coast of Maine. Ben is an ecologist, currently working on stream habitat restoration.
I love animals and have quite a bit of experience working with, studying, and writing about Friesian horses in particular. I come from a fairly artistic family and I like to draw and do a bit of graphic design and needle felted sculpture. I'm also pretty involved with various horse-obsessed activities, I have a Morgan who I love dearly, and have studied under professional horse trainers.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
So far, just a few official Couchsurf.org visits- a quick stay in Waltham, MA, a wonderful encounter in Montreal- and an accidental couchsurf stay in Burlington VT. But many unofficial all over New England, some in Europe and hopefully many more to come!
Interests
K- horses, animals and their rights, learning, reading voraciously when time permits, educational reform & unschooling, helping wildlife and the environment, vegetarianism, sustainable living, mandolin
Ben- guitar, singing, street performing, ecology, stream habitat design, snow physics, GIS, philosophy, writing, thinking
Music, Movies, and Books
K- I like most music, particularly folk.
Movies: Benny & Joon, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Black Stallion, Ladyhawke, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Books: !! too many to list. Authors I like include James Herriot, Mercedes Lackey, Tolkien, Rowling, Kenneth C. Davis, Turnbull. For enjoyment I like good fantasy/scifi, but any well written page-turner will satisfy me. I also love reference books.. I don't read them cover to cover usually....but I...well.. use them for reference and useless fact-finding.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
K- I spent two months helping care for injured wildlife on the coast of Maine, from squirrels to red tailed hawks. So much to learn, and I loved it!
Some favorite places from a trip to mainland Europe -- Saverne France, Gimmewald Switz, Bruges Belgium.
Spent four days winter hiking and camping with no tents or stoves or outhouses (!) in the Lowell Mountains of Northern Vermont in December '08.
I also helped to run the Draft Horse Management program at the school, and enjoyed spending my time helping students learn how to log and plow our college's land.
Teach, Learn, Share
What I know about: K- horses, web and graphic design, wildlife rehabilitation, herding cats & liberals, unschooling. I'm teaching myself the mandolin with some help from some my more musically inclined friends. I could probably teach you a couple simple songs.
If you want to know about Friesian horses my site is a great jumping off point: www.friesiancrazy.com. I could talk about Friesians all day!
I'd love to learn how to play an instrument or two (check), and to dance... should probably learn how to swim too. And juggle...and make my own clothes (particularly hats!) (check)...and become fluent in other languages...and cook something well... and do archery from horseback (!).
