ABOUT ME

I had a great calculus teacher in high school. Actually his teaching was awful, but he had decent advice. He told me never to turn down the opportunity to learn about or do something new. Everything is relevant.

Unfortunately, living by this principle makes it difficult to find a clear direction in life. I've gone from researching DNA replication to studying traditional medicine in Mongolia to raising chickens in Tanzania to reading anthropology at Oxford, and I have no idea where I'll be next.

My life's story will make for a terribly disjunctive memoir. My biographer should probably resort to collage or video montage. Mixed media with lots of colour, texture and shiny stuff. And since no one really enjoys collage, this piece should be left incomplete and cremated with my body after I depart. To commemorate the importance of coffee in my life, and because the origins of the drink are disputed, my ashes will be sprinkled in equal proportions over Ethiopia and Yemen.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Hotels suck. So I host when I can and surf when I travel. And even if there is no couch / bed / floor space available, it's great to meet people who know their way around, especially if visiting a new place for a short period.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've met amazing people in the CS community in Mombasa, Calais, and Berlin. No bad experiences, and they've taught me a ton about their home places!

Interests

Moats. I suppose it could be nice to have a small fishery outside your castle, but it's just so isolationist and unwelcoming. They really make you look like a jerk.

I am also interested in coffee art, transcultural cooking, ecology, and nomadic life. And I dabble in polyphasic sleep, but this is by nature, not choice.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Rode a horse in Mongolia that I found out was one of the previous Naadam race champions. Scary ride but a great memory!

What I Can Share with Hosts

I can make some nice dahl, and if you're a (non-vegan) breakfast person, I'm know my way around a poached egg.

I'm not a musician, but I'm always down for a jam session! Learning bachata and salsa as well!

Countries I’ve Visited

China, Kenya, Mongolia, Puerto Rico, Russian Federation, Rwanda, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, United States

Countries I’ve Lived In
