Overview
About Me
Everybody calls me Kemi!
I'm Okinawan-Brazilian and am studying to become an anthropologist, so I've got lots of culture to share! I enjoy talking about nearly anything from an academic/scientific perspective. Have you thought of fanfiction as a tool for community and identity-making? Or the impact of the Cold War on American science fiction? Or why the Zapatistas believe growing your own food is essential to liberation? Let's talk about it!
I also love cooking and eating new kinds of food, exchanging experiences and perceptions of the world, and meeting new people - as it opens the doors to all great things in life.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
Right now I'm looking for a place to stay in LA with a friend! We're broke, but we'd love to visit the city.

Music, Movies, and Books
MUSIC: anything, really. Metallica and Ratos de Porão are great; I love the beauty of American rap and hip hop; Brazilian funk, dancehall, and reggaeton are great to dance to; have been listening a lot to A Tribe Called Red, too. 3rd World by Immortal Technique is my jam!
MOVIES: Oldboy and The Handmaiden are my Park Chan-Wook favorites! A couple of Sion Sono's films, both Tropa de Elite movies, The Man From Nowhere, Dreams by Akira Kurosawa, Inception, Ghost in the Shell (1995), Arrival, Her, Get Out, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Kung Fu Hustle, Summer Wars.
BOOKS: I'm actually bad at reading fiction novels, but I've read Murakami's 1Q84 trilogy and Thomas Harris' Red Dragon. Aside from that, Orientalism by Edward Said and Open Veins of Latin America by Eduardo Galeano are probably my most well-known favorites.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Met one of my favorite authors and got drunk with him!
