About Me

Hi (:

My name is Gabriela and from August (of 2015) to March (of 2016) I will be living in Portugal to study Portuguese and English Literature. Half of my bag came filled with books that I could not read yet because I spent my time travelling in Portugal and, since the classes started, reading pounds of Victorian poetry. I have lots of dreams but I waste too much time seing funny videos on YouTube. I really like adverbs and to talk about myself in the third person. For me, it's really difficult to dissociate real life from imagination.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

To experience! From different countries to different languages, I want to meet people from all the world to try to understand what surrounds me in my very own neighborhood. By seing other realities, I hope to stop giving value to things that seem too much important now and start to appreciate every sunset, every smile and every night spent in a couch of a complete stranger.

Interests

I like: books, movies, travels, cartoons, series, music, visual arts, cotton-candy, pizza, tea, hardcover notebooks, puzzles (with thousands of pieces, mainly), old pictures, pets (dogs and rabbits), to make parodies of famous poems, to sleep twenty minutes after lunch (maybe fourty), to look to the sky, to hug.

I don't like: translations of movie titles to Portuguese, to have many kinds of allergies, people who don't cut their nails (specially feet nails), to wake up too early, rainy-stormy-cloudy-days, have reading Twilight when I was a teenager, clothes made of wool, high heels, the lift's door of the building that I live in Brazil, coffe (don't judge me), callcenter calls, the noise of something made of metal scratching a blackboard, the feeling that a toothpick provokes in my tongue.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: Well, I was raised in a family that hears all kinds of music. Led Zeppelin and The Beatles are my foundations. Once a teenager, I've learned to love Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, Belle and Sebastian, Patti Smith, Velvet Underground, Arcade Fire, Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan, Jake Bugg, Simon and Garfunkel, New Order. If you checked my recent played songs on Spotify you would see lots of Pink Floyd and The Smiths. I think that says a lot about me.

Movies: I want to become a screeplaywriter one day, so movies are really a thing for me. I enjoy watching b&w movies, as the ones made by Frank Capra. They are probably my favourite. I also like movie such as: Synecdoche New York, Upstream Colour, Eternal Sunshine of the Spoteless Mind, Up and Interstellar (very different choices, I guess, but all good films).

Books: Come on, I'm a literature student. I read anything from Harry Potter to Finnegans Wake (and I'm my heart they share the same space and importance). Nowadays, I'm specially amazed by the works of Walt Whitman and David Foster Wallace.

Teach, Learn, Share

I dont't think that I have anything to teach to anyone, but I can certaily learn a lot yet. To share, I have my personal blog: 197dias.wordpress.com, where I write about being an exchange student and how it affects my daily life.

What I Can Share with Hosts

The only truth (if there is any truth) that I always carry with me is that I believe in people's kindness and goodness, despite all the hate and war that we see every day. I had awesome conversations with people that I don't know in bus stops and during a lunch that I was supposed to be having alone and learned to appreciate what every person has of unique.

I hope I can keep doing that and carrying that truth while I'm trying to find a answer for all the things I can not understand.
