Music, Movies, and Books
Movies: Moonrise Kingdom, Son of Rambow, The Fall, Pan's Labyrinth, Spirited Away, The Big Lebowski, Harold and Maude. Coen Brothers, (some) Tarrantino, Wes Anderson, Darren Aronofsky. Jurassic Park.
Music: Animal Collective, Sufjan Stevens, Radiohead, Ben Folds, Soul Coughing, Beck, Basement Jaxx, Minus the Bear, Sigur Rós. Indie, Electronic, Rap/Hip-Hop, Country/Bluegrass.
Right now:
Animal Collective — Centipede Hz
Ke$ha — Warrior (no joke)
Hellogoodbye — Would It Kill You?
Saffron Stonehedge — Silver & Gold
Mississippi John Hurt — Last Sessions
Books: Pretty much anything about food—Michael Pollan, food history, local/personal food stories like Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver or Farm City by Novella Carpenter. Non-fiction has been huge for me in the last several years—everything from The World Without Us to American Buffalo. For fiction, nothing's better than Tom Robbins (Skinny Legs and All and Jitterbug Perfume are my favorites) and Dave Eggers. I was on a Chuck Palahniuk kick for a while—Choke and Survivor were great. The Art of Simple Food by Alice Waters.
