I originally found out about couch surfing from a couch surfing couple I met in Austria.

I became acquainted with Lars and Betty at a table full of people including a very talented magician who was keeping everyone in a thrall. For various reasons, though, I zeroed in on this German couple and spent most of the night chatting with them. The next day Lars and Betty invited me to a gathering of couch surfers and I was immediately smitten with the community.

Couchsurfing is clearly a great community of people and it fills my basic needs as a traveler. I currently prefer to travel alone but I'm also a social creature and Couchsurfing seems like a good way to balance these requirements.
