Overview
About Me
My wife and I moved from San Diego to Utqiaġvik (Barrow) in 2015. She had the connection to the community as she spent part of her childhood and early 20s here, and now teaches middle school.
I serve as the executive director of our regional housing authority. I have a degree in journalism, enjoy writing and tinkering, and reflecting on how buildings, infrastructure, and energy systems fit into society.
We both enjoy traveling and getting to know other travelers from all over the world.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
I enjoy getting out my normal lane when possible and meeting people and hearing stories I wouldn't in my 9-to-5 life. I've also had some great experiences as a traveler in the past that I'd like to pay forward.
Interests
I read and write a lot. I understand that science tells us climate change is an existential threat and have more or less devoted my professional energies and much of my personal energies into reckoning with the problem in terms of resource management and cultural adaptation. In the summers, there's nothing better than a beach bonfire with friends along the road out to Point Barrow. I’ve recently gotten into rock climbing and am trying to pay more attention to my overall health and fitness.

Music, Movies, and Books
I read mostly nonfiction and subscribe to local papers. I also listen to a handful of nerdy podcasts about energy, climate, and politics. Not a huge TV watcher but love me some BoJack Horseman.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I went to Barack Obama's inauguration in January 2009. (Yes, his was bigger.)
Teach, Learn, Share
Here's an essay I wrote for High Country News about on of my favorite experiences in Utqiaġvik: https://www.hcn.org/issues/50.20/essays-life-lessons-learned-on-a-dogsled
