About Me

CURRENT MISSION
To make the world a little better. Perhaps by meeting fellow couch surfers, perhaps by repairing something, perhaps by teaching or helping someone.

To go on adventures all over the world. Your town might be next!

Currently living on a 44ft sailing ketch, sometimes sailing, sometimes anchored off some island, sometimes on land visiting and traveling.

Some past ventures:
Five months living in India.
An epic adventure - By bicycle. We starting in the US, then south through Central and South America. 21 months, 13,000km. But it's really all about the people. We met so many wonderful and generous folk. Check out the journal at crazyguyonabike.com/doc/8669
I've backpacked in many wilderness destinations, especially the White Mtns of NH, Adirondacks, Torres de Paine, canoed the Missinaibi, and more. More journals at garysjournals.blogspot.com
We just finished sailing the 'mini loop' in a MacGregor 26S sailboat. Our blog is at eclipses-odyssey.blogspot.com
Sailed to the Bahamas for several months.

PHILOSOPHY:
Gallmaufrian, including: Taoist, atheist, humanist, pagan, Universalist, Buddhist, Mayan, agnostic, and eager to add to the list.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've hosted at my own home, and been a guest in many countries. CS-ing is sooo much better than staying in a generic 'box' of a hotel. Uggh.

Interests

Cycling, canoeing, backpacking, camping, wild camping, stealth camping, wilderness, sailing.
Home repairs, handyman, maps, people, religions.
Backcountry culinary arts. Homemade wine.

Music, Movies, and Books

Edward Abbey, John McPhee, Tolkien, Theodore Geisel, others.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

All the wonderful generous friendly people I've met in this world.

I played a key role in helping a man and his family escape from Sudan after several of his friends were 'disappeared.'

Kayaking with Beluga whales and getting pushed around by them.

Teach, Learn, Share

Handyman. This is my current profession.
Cartography, pre-GIS and pre-GPS.
Hydrogeology and contaminant transport in groundwater, streamflow measurement, environmental assessment of water.
Fermentation, distillation, solar distillation.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Stories, cooking, more. I'm really good at fixing things.
