One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I used to work in a prison, where I taught math to inmates who wanted a shot at qualifying for an associate's degree after they got out. The only thing you needed to qualify for the program was good behavior; nothing more, nothing less. Here I saw a man who had no previous education, and basically no hope of ever leaving prison, cry tears of joy over learning the concept of negative numbers for the first time.
