to produce one gold wedding band, twenty tons of earth is saturated with cyanide solution until the heavy metals are dissolved and leach out. After the gold is reclaimed the cyanide and everything else it dissolves collects in toxic waste pools and soaks into the groundwater. the mining companies pay 5$ per acre for public land, the rate that was established in 1875, 50 years before cyanide leaching was discovered when mining for gold was done with a horse and a donkey and did comparatively little harm to the land.
