Music, Movies, and Books

My favorite bands are those that experiment with weird sounds and structures but hold it together with a good hook, like Deerhoof, Of Montreal, Neutral Milk Hotel, Caribou, Godspeed! You Black Emperor and Lightning Bolt. I grew up on punk and hardcore and still really like noisy business such as Sunn 0))). Lately been playing more folksy stuff with some roots-loving friends. Other media... American directors like Kubrick and the Cohen brothers rock my world, Ken Loach from England is really cool, I adore everything by Almodovar (Spain) and Kieslowski (Poland). Just watched all of Wan Kar Wai with Lisa. My favorite book is probably Lord of the Rings because of its message of a simple life lived lightly on the Earth, the need for understanding between peoples of different cultural backgrounds, and the dangers of power in all its manifestations. Plus all the sick archaic English.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

The sky on a clear night in Montana.

Teach, Learn, Share

I speak and teach Spanish and love it. As a non-native speaker I still have plenty to learn myself. Languages in general are endlessly fascinating to me and my current project is learning Armenian, the language (one of them, anyway!) of my wonderful girlfriend and her family. Bicycling means a lot to me. Its my main form of transportation and I believe in it passionately. And I'm pretty good at tune-ups and basic repairs. I play guitar, cello, drums, and maybe even the tuba on a good day (but its been a while). I really want to learn how to cook weirder food (esp. fermentation. Love that umami).
