About Me

I am more than a quarter of a century old guy from Central Bohemia, with a Bohemian heart and soul. Born in Brandýs nad Labem-Stará Boleslav, lived in Říčany, Prague-Nusle, Odolena Voda, Kralupy nad Vltavou-Lobeček, Ostrava-Výškovice, now living in Frýdek-Místek. I live with my more-wife-than-a-girlfriend, neither of us has a driving license and still we visited many places that nobody ever heard of.

I like to create stuff (software in my case) that will make someone’s life easier, and to give people some knowledge (languages, linguistics) they are looking for. I value truthworthiness, reliability and respect of other people’s thoughts, beliefs and values. I like when things that are supposed to work are working and hate when the system overgrows human personality. I am proud of being myself even though there is really only a few things I am good at.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

We are offering our foldable cot to meet people in the first place – to see that the world doesn’t end at the town/country borders. It’s also satisfying to offer an affordable way to spend night in a foreign city. Couchsurfing is a way to make the world a better place, so I’m in!

Interests

My biggest passion is linguistic/morphology and learning languages. Presumably, I like to travel, but preferably on foot or by bike on a nice day through the vicinity my living place rather that spending many hours on a plane and then rushing through the streets of some unknown city. When traveling somewhere further from home, I usually try to find some not too popular places, away from the city centers, to see the real life, some nature, meet people and not just visit the tourist attractions.

While out, I enjoy Geocaching, both in the town and in the nature. From urban life I am fond of good beer, good tea and social places where nice people live and gather. If you want, I can teach you how to play a Japanese card game Koi koi played with flower cards called Hanafuda.

Music, Movies, and Books

When I listen to music, my playlist usually include punk, metal and similar hardcore, but usually it is filled by regional music of all genres from all ends of the world. From the well-known bands I can name Rammstein, Manowar, Sigur rós (not too hardcore, I know) as being my favorites. From the unknown, my favorites are Umbrtka or Medvěd 009.

My favorite movie is James Cameron’s Avatar and I’d love to be able to speak the Na’vi language. As of books, I would read anything that gets in to my hands. My long-time favorites are books by Stephen King. A special place of my heart occupies an anime/manga series Inuyasha. My most favorite genre of books and movies is post-apocalyptic science fiction. If I should recommend a book to someone, it would be either Malevil by Robert Merle or The Stand by Stephen King.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

• I swam in a very cold river for a Geocache and had to be rescued by a passing by ship.
• I went to Croatia by train without any money in my pocket, lost my sleeping bag on the way, still spent a week there.
• I rode 2× 70 km on a bike between a train station and a hotel to attend a conference without having to go by car.

Teach, Learn, Share

I have a few years of professional Japanese teaching experience, both kids and adults, so even though I am far from being fluent, I can offer at least elementary and intermediate knowledge of the language. The same applies to German, but I’ve been never teaching it professionally. Many friends and even people I never heard about come to me with questions on linguistics and language issues, and I rarely can’t answer them. Have any question about languages of the world (or at least Europe)? Ask me.

I also taught many people how to play Koi koi, a Japanese card game played with flower cards. These people now play it regularly and teach it to others. Thanks to that the game has now become quite popular in my land. I can also teach you how to program in various programming languages. My knowledge of some is now a bit rusty, though I never wrote a single line of code in Rust.

What I Can Share with Hosts

When I go to your place, I can at least bring you some local sweets, biscuits, good beer or wine. Czechia is famous for its beer and wine and it’d be pleasure for me to bring you some.

Do you like languages? I know a few to at least some extent. If we have some of them in common, we can try to chat and learn from that experience. Are you learning Czech or Slovak? Even better!

Even though I am not very handy, I am not disgusted of work. Would it help you if I washed your dishes? Just ask me.
