NB: I have moved from the capital (Santo Domingo) to the countryside to work on microcredit- and education-related projects in a Haitian community (batey). If you have a flexible travel schedule and would look to come up to the batey to visit, it's only 30 minutes from Santiago and not too far from the north coast beaches (Puerto Plata, Sosua, Cabarete).
