关于我

CURRENT MISSION

Journey home, from the very south of New Zealand to north of Scotland, over land and sea, with nothing but a passport

My name is Barry-Dean Dewson but everyone calls me Baz. I was born in Reading, England 32 years ago, an only child. I hit the road over six years ago and have been a nomad ever since, never really settling down in one place. No one can guess my accent anymore. As the expression goes,“Wherever I lay my hat, thats my home, but seeing as I dont wear hats because my ears are too big, I guess I just kept wandering.

My first memory of travelling was when my mum took me to the US when I was 4 years old. We were there for a whole month and it was my first Halloween ever. No wonder I can remember everything about that trip,€œ and now have such a passion for fancy dress.

So when I decided to start travelling in my early 20's, where better to start then back in the USA! I worked as a camp counsellor and photographer at a summer camp in upstate New York. My enthusiasm earned me the top spot running three of the biggest camp games of the year and we also won! :)

Then drove down to Miami, flew to San Francisco and drove down Highway 1 to San Diego. It was one of the best drives of my life. After a trip to Vegas (note: what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas) I flew to New York, then home!

The next leg of my travels was a bit unexpected. There was a big change in my life and I decided to travel Australia for 6 months. I started in Adelaide. It took 2 months to get on my feet, then to Melbourne for my first taste of hostel living at Lords Lodge. From that point on, the fun never stopped. I managed to follow the sun for 14 months Sydney, Noosa, Brisbane, Fraser Island, The Whitsundays, Cairns on a road trip with some truly amazing people. Before the Australian government could kick me out, I found a job pearl farming in Broome that would get me a 2nd year visa. The call to my mum was one of the hardest phone calls for a mummys boy to make. Not only did I have to tell her I was staying for the rest of the year, but that I was staying for a second. Not a happy mummy!!! I ended up travelling around Australia a second time, even getting to Alice Springs and Uluru. But finally my visa was up again. So where to next?

Queenstown, New ZealandQueenstown: Adventure capital of the world! I got myself 4 of the best jobs someone could ever get. I started off at the bottom as a glassy, then after proving myself, worked as a bartender at the best bar in Queenstown, World Bar, while working for Mad Dog River Boarding during the day. What a summer! Then I got asked to manage the biggest pub crawl in Queenstown called Big Night Out! To top it all off, I worked as a Host for AJ Hackett Bungy at the worlds first commercial bungy site, The Kawarau Bridge. They Loved me so much that sponsored me for 2 years. I jumped as many time as possible. I loved it.But the open road called. I wanted something more. I needed to shake things up, I needed a culture shock and where better to go than South-east Asia! In 2012 I was hired to be a Tour Leader for Stray Asia. I have been leading groups all over Thailand and Laos, have done some amazing things and met some amazing people. Working as a Tour Leader has prepared me for anything, and I mean anything. All of my experiences and adventures, my six plus years as a nomad has led me to this: taking the long way home. So this is where it starts for me. Connecting the dots, I am on a quest to see if I can use all of my experience, hard work and good looks to get me home over land and sea; I am going the long way home.

About Going the Long Way Home
The Quest
After six years as a nomad, to finally go home to my family, travelling from the very southern tip of New Zealand to Scotland, over land and sea, helping as many people as possible and having fun! I'll video blog the entire adventure.
Start
February 18, 2013, My Mum & Dads Birthday.
I will start the journey with nothing but the clothes on my back, my Passport, Laptop, Camera and Phone, and I cant sell any of these things! I'll be stuffed if it's raining!!!
Travel
I will travel any way I can, just NO flights! So I'll be putting out my thumb, calling on old friends or using contacts I have made to help me forward on my journey. It's a long way from New Zealand to Scotland and I'm going to need all the help I can get. Same goes for sleeping,€œ I know I may have to sleep on the street at some point, but I'll use my charm to get me into the nicest places on the planet: into people's hearts and homes :)

Money
It will be tough for the first couple of weeks. I do plan on working and getting sponsors to help me along the way. I want to do the whole trip for less than it would take to fly. I have worked it out that I can spend about $100 of my own money per country. I'll be relying on my hard work and the kindness of friends and strangers to provide food and accommodation.
Helping
One of the main reasons I am doing this is so I can help whoever I want or who ever asks for it! Everything from seeing a man in the street and buying him some food, to saving an elephant in Thailand. I want to bring awareness to these charities in my video blogs. By not taking any flights, I'am reducing my carbon footprint!

Fun and Adventure
This is going to be the biggest adventure of my life. My last six years as a world nomad have been a blast. I can't imagine what this is going to be like.

Blogging
I would love to put my adventures in writing, but seeing as I,am dyslexic and it's taken me 3 hours to write this, I don't want to be glued to a laptop this whole trip. My reading disability has never stopped me for doing anything I have wanted to do. So to make this possible, I'll be making weekly video blogs!

End
I hope it never will!
