About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Never stop being curious, live each moment, and always stand up for what's right.

ABOUT ME

Born and raised in Vancouver, I'm a true West Coaster at heart. As much as I love the rest of the world, the mountains, forest and sea are home for me.

Currently I'm finishing up architecture studies, but I also have a background in engineering and ecology. I'm very laid back and easy to get along with, but also responsible and reliable. When something needs to be done I'm usually the one to make it happen. Friends both young and old often come to me for advice.

I'm very engaged in the community. Between degrees I was a founding member of several non-profit societies working for social justice, the environment, political accountability, and keep active with many environmental groups trying to make the world a better place and protect the biodiversity that sustains us.

PHILOSOPHY

I guess my kindergarten teacher had a more lasting effect than I realized, since my basic underlying philosophy is treat others as you wish to be treated. That and leave the world a better place. I support full rights for everyone no matter their race, religion, sexual preference, politics, or whatever. We're all here for a short visit, so let's just live in peace and with love for each other. Of course, that also extends to all the others plants and animals who inhabit our world with us. We need them to live! With this in mind, I try to minimize my impact on the world and am always trying to improve in this regard and help others do the same.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I love traveling and learning about places and culture, and there's no better way to do that than by meeting the locals and getting their perspective. So far I've only stayed with and hosted one time each, but both have been great experiences and left me with new friends. Here's hoping for many more great travel and couchsurfing times ahead!

Interests

My main interest is living a simple life in a happy and healthy world. More broadly this means building community, gardening, staying active, and standing up for progressive policies here and abroad, both in terms of the environment and social justice. Day to day, I love learning about new things, meeting new people and trying new experiences.

What am I interested in specifically? In no specific order:
Travel, photography, urban agriculture, cycling, ecology, marine biology, community development, environmental education, good wine and good beer, surfing, canoeing, backcountry hiking, rock climbing, social justice, team sports (have you ever played underwater hockey?), indie and folk music, making things with my hands, being mindful, a good book, laughing, laughing at myself, hugs, and on and on...

Music, Movies, and Books

My taste in music ranges from indie rock and folk to instrumental, classical, and world, although I enjoy and am open to almost anything. My favourite musician of all time is the late great Oliver Schroer, a talented Canadian fiddler who coaxed sounds out of his instrument like no other. One of my favourite books is Trauma Farm, a perfect interlacing of memoir, history, political analysis, humour, and generally great storytelling focused on agriculture and life on a small farm today.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Working with marine biologists in remote British Columbia while Orca and dolphins play around us will always be a favourite memory. I've seen most of BC, and have also driven across Canada although I still have much to see there. I've climbed the tallest mountain in North Africa, but will stand by the fact that mountains in BC are far more difficult. I've been in remote places where few have ever stood, and even fallen into a glacial crevasse, although I wouldn't recommend the latter. However many things I've seen and done I hope is just a small fragment of what I'm able to in the years to come.

Teach, Learn, Share

I love learning and sharing what I know. In my short 29 years on this planet I've amassed quite a random assortment of knowledge that is just waiting for a chance to spill over. I'm no expert but have years of experience in terrestrial ecology and marine biology, and I'm a complete geography, astronomy, and history nerd just full of random trivia that I'm always trying to piece together a somewhat accurate understanding of the world. Whatever your story is, I'd love to hear it!
