ABOUT ME

I am studying Outdoor Adventure Leadership at Southern Oregon University, and as part of our upper division practicum experience, my friend Bennett and I recently went on a six month mountain biking, kayaking, rock climbing adventure around the country! We traveled for six months and learned so much through the experience! We met amazing people all over the country who took us in, showed us their local crag or trails, and gave us a window into their lifestyles. We developed our technical skills but also had countless opportunities to work on our communication skills and learn the ways of vehicular living. Living on the road taught us to appreciate coming home, but of course, we're excited to get out there again soon.

As far as me personally, I am an outdoor enthusiast and I enjoy mountain biking, kayaking, rock climbing, and practicing primitive skills like bow-drill fire making and archery. I also like to work with my hands and I used to do a fair amount of metal and leather work. My true love is mountain biking and the community that is built around it, but I generally enjoy the outdoors and have found the community to be a huge part of that. I started the mountain biking component of our university's outdoor program, and have been able to lead beginner oriented mountain bike trips through that. I've also spent a fair amount of time working with the National Interscholastic Cycling Association, putting on races, coaching summer camps, and most recently, as a NICA ambassador on this cross-country trip. On our trip we also spent a week working on an organic farm in Maryland and I felt really good doing that, so it's something I'd like to explore more in the future.

PHILOSOPHY

Still figuring that out, but one thing I have learned: Keeping a positive attitude is key to enjoying and appreciating life.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I recently spent six months traveling the country with my friend/roommate and we stayed with a bunch of people along the way - some through couchsurfing and some not. Some were good experiences, others were great experiences, and all of them taught me about being a good guest and a good host. Now that we're back home in Ashland with a stable living situation, we're excited to pass it forward and host folks ourselves!

I have a reasonable level of experience with mountain biking, rock climbing, and kayaking, as well as living and cooking out of a truck, working for an underfunded outdoor program, and leading outdoor trips. I'd be happy to teach a host or guest anything I can in any of these areas.

I'd love to learn more about small-scale farming, playing guitar, ukulele, or harmonica, metal and leather working, building tiny houses, other cultures and places, Spanish, working on cars, making videos, training dogs, snow science, and so many other things!
