About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To be the best person I can be, using my skills in engineering/IT to make the world a better and more fun place. Couch surfing is part of this, especially the fun part as it allows me to connect with very diverse groups of people that share the same travel passion as me. This simple website brings so much power to allowing travellers to help each other out. Please help me out by reading my whole profile first and letting me know what is most interesting about me if you want to stay at my house.

ABOUT ME

Student who works hard and travels/parties harder.

People have so many different views about me I think. I guess I have a wide variety of friends, so the more quiet ones will think I am very outgoing and stuff, while a lot of my really partying friends think I am a bit tame. I guess I try to be a bit of everything, I want to study harder when it is most important, and then celebrate in style.

I may be a bit ambitious, I am trying to go ahead with many things in my young life, from starting up a monthly nightclub event, to attempting to make iPhone Apps and websites, to wanting to be an awesome guitarist in a heavy metal band. I want it all, it is true, but working towards these ultimately makes me a better person, even though I do not always get good at any one particular thing.

PHILOSOPHY

I try to make the most of my life. I work full time as an engineer in the government, and I am all well dressed up and stuff. Then I go home on weekends, party a lot, play music, wear my heavy metal band t-shirts, get super drunk etc. It is funny when my metalhead friends see me in my work gear for the first time, and my non-metal friends see me dressed as a metalhead. So yeah, huge split between my work and social life, I think this is a great way to live!

One thing I wanted to be more part of in life is university campus life. Living in student accommodation was amazing as an exchange student. Living in the same house in the suburbs for my whole life got a bit boring I guess. I made up for it becoming the President of a new student club and spending a lot of time in the student club circles. I study my Masters degree by distance, so I do not have as much a campus life these days, but I am very active within the small social circle at this university, and I currently live in a very students area, so I am happy :)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I believe in the idea of putting in what you get out. My amazing travels have made me want to open my house so I can pretend I am still travelling by meeting other travellers, sharing their stories and suggesting things to do in my city that they might not know about.

I want to help as many people as I can by offering my house to travellers who head to Canberra. Please note that I live in a share house and have to ask my housemate first (he is normally fine with it). Weekends are also my time to catch up on life, cleaning and often university, so it might be hard to host you on the weekend unless you say that you want to go out with me in the evenings. We have a fold out bed in the living room for two people, and can have additional people in our music room at the back of the house, especially if you travel with a mattress.

When I travel, I want to meet awesome people who can show me the quirky things about their home, I like going out at night just to a pub or rock music bar, I never really want to go to nightclubs. I want to see the city during the day, if we can, maybe find actives to do together unless my host is too busy with work or something else.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I actually met a couch surfer while at Sweden Rock Festival and stayed with him the night after the festival finished to recover! Was a great experience, I would like to be able to plan it out better next time though and host in the not too distant future.

I by far had the best experiences couch surfing in Finland, I did some amazing things I never would have done if I stayed at a hostel. I want to return this to the people I host after I myself have had such good hosts. I feel that Canberra has a lot to offer depending on what your interests are and I want all people that stay with me to have a good time here.

Interests

HEAVY METAL! Playing guitar, audio engineering, beer brewing, socialising, learning about technology, making things, programming, exploring cities, learning more about culture, other countries etc.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: All types of heavy metal and rock music. I play guitar and try to write my music. I like all bands from Opeth to Pain of Salvation, from Cannibal Corpse to Rhapsody of Fire, all over the place!

Movies: Avatar, Interstellar, The Room,

Books: Dan Brown, J.R.R. Tolkien, Tom Clancy,

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

The Northern Lights in Tromsø. Well, I guess they were a bit disappointing compared to the photos (nice job photoshop and fancy cameras) but it really is amazing knowing you are under them. I would stare and they seem to stay still. I would look away and then look again and they did not look the same as before in any way.

Teach, Learn, Share

I want to teach people about engineering and music. I am also writing a blog about how my student exchange was the best thing to happen to me in my life to convince other people to do similar. My student exchange greatly changed the way I live back home in Australia in such an overwhelmingly positive way, I want to share these experiences with other people!

What I Can Share with Hosts

I like couch surfing and want it to be an amazing time for both me and people that stay with me. I have taken all my couch surfers out with my friends, I often help dropping them at places around the city and suggesting things to do. A lot of the time, I want to join in as well but I am very busy with work and study. I sometimes say no to a lot of people that wish to stay with me, but if I think I can fit you in my schedule or you tell me what you want to do, I can probably help out! It is so much more enticing to host people that read my profile and find out the interesting things about me. If I get a copy/pasted message, I will most likely not even reply.

When I travel, I want to live by the same philosophy as when I host, I spend hours looking for hosts that I want to meet. In some ways, staying at a hostel would be easier, but not as fun. Staying at someones house for free is not quite the best thing about couch surfing for me anymore.

Most importantly, I want to share stories and suggest good things to do in places I have lived and travelled. I can probably tell some tourists things about Australia that they wouldn't know, but at the same time, tourists pick up a lot of different things about Australia that I would have not known because my perspective is different being born and raised here. Sharing is caring :)
