About Me

Hello! I'm Guilherme (which is hard to pronounce in some languages, so feel free to translate it - William, Guillermo or anyway you prefer it), and I'm Brazilian, born and raised at São Paulo. Right now, my main occupation is studying Cinema at USP, the University of São Paulo, and working with everything I can that is related to movies, music or writing in general.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

In recente years, I found myself believing that the world I wanna live in is a world based on sharing, empathy and connection, rather than competition and aggression. Couchsurfing, for me, is a way of practicing that, meeting new people, exchanging experiences, learning and teaching whatever we can. So I look forward for the day when it's weird somebody is NOT on Couchsurfing, because sharing will be this great value to all of us.

Interests

I'm interested in meeting new people, and living new experiences! I really wanna know how people live outside of my bubble, connect with other ways of thinking, of perceiving movies, music and dance. And, if possible, I would love to learn new languages and expressions!

Music, Movies, and Books

Well, I don't know how it is outside of Brasil, but here there is kind of a stereotype about Cinema students: that we only like art movies, films from the 20s, Tarkovsky, Eiseinstein and other Russian directors.
The fact is: I'm really not one of those students. I really enjoy pop culture, and really love Tarantino, Spielberg, Nolan and all of these people. My favorite movie probably is a really sweet little movie called About Time - because I believe movies are not meant only to do amazing camera works and subtext, but simply to touch the audience.
I adore brazilian music (MPB), especially samba and forró, so I could gladly show somethings Brazilian other than Garota de Ipanema (which is great, but there is soooo much more). But, of course, I listen to almost anything, especially pop, rock, some electronic and trance. The only thing I struggle to listen is metal, but I'm working on it haha.
As for books, I read a lot! My mother is a book publisher, so the house if always filled with books and more books. I began with Harry Potter when I was little, and I read a little bit of everything by now... My favorite author is Gabriel García Marquez (I love all the latin american writers!), but right after him I have to say Neil Gaiman (ask me about Sandman, please).

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Well, that's a tough one! Hopefully at the end of all the traveling I intend to do, it will be even harder to select just one thing to put here. I went backpacking with friends to South America, spent an amazing New-years Eve at Bahia (Brasil), played with a band for 2000+ people... But I have to say that when I was a kid, I made a tree house, and, well, I'm quite proud of it... haha

Teach, Learn, Share

Well, I'd love to share everything I know about Cinema, for starters! I read a lot about the art of writing and filming, so if you like movies we sure can have a good talk. I can play some instruments, like guitar, piano, bass, drums, pandeiro, ukulele, cavaquinho, and I'm always up for a jam or a teaching a little bit about how to play something. Also, if you have a camera somewhere, I'd love to go out and take some pictures and share the little I know about photography!
As to learning, I'm eager to discover everything about everything! I'm up to learning whatever anyone can teach me, so please, share with me all you can!

What I Can Share with Hosts

As a friend of mine would say, the dishes and the bill, for one! I would like to help around as much as I can, and not being a burden is an objective of course!

I would love to share my culture, my visions of the world, and, of course, my house here in Sao Paulo!
