I think that meeting locals is definitely the best way to roam around a new city!
I've had the greatest of all experience when I was roaming around with a friend of mine in Czech Republic, which made me love the concept behind couchsurfing. I haven't host myself, yet! But anyway, if you're in for a good conversation and a glass of decent ale, you can count on me!
