ABOUT ME
Plot summary: right now I'm on a bike tour which proposes to take me over 5000 miles from Moab Utah to Caracas Venezuela, carrying little more beyond some camping gear and a saxophone in pursuit of a deeper understanding of myself and the human spirit.
I've had the pleasure and honor of spending time and breaking bread with people from all strata of society on this journey, from dirt-poor indigenous Tarahumara in the Sierra Madre Occidental to narcotraficos in Sinaloa (nice guys, really) to artists and bohemians and professional and students and people of all sorts. From all of these, I have learned something new, and I am proud to call them my friends.
On this trip, I've battled fierce summer storms, experienced a gastrointestinal apocalypse, toed the line with death in the ocean, fallen in love, and smushed at least five hundred grasshoppers under my bike tires. I am a romantic at heart, a musician and an artist, but this is tempered by another part of me which seeks to face down the things that I am afraid of and to fight to be better each day.
My favorite alcohol is whisky (irish or scotch depends on my mood) closely followed by my new mistress, mezcal. I will eat anything, especially if it's weird and slimy. I like music but my mp3 player broke so I've been listening to nothing but the wind in my ears for about a month now, and that's pretty cool too.
PHILOSOPHY
Scientific skepticism + secular humanism + human compassion + artistic yearning.
Be excellent.
Also, I categorically reject all forms of astrology, homeopathy, and this whole anti-vaccination movement.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I could squawk at length about sunrises and sunsets, night skies and red rock canyons, but truth be told there is beauty in everything; a hint of the eternal exists in everything impermanent. An education in the sciences has given me eyes to see farther and closer, and an education in the liberal arts has given me the heart to feel deeper. In the end, and beginning, we are all stardust.
I've played my saxophone in a lot of weird places. Previous engagements have included: national parks, art museums, seedy dive bars with chicken wire around the stage, a packed house in a velvet-lined room, on stage at Bonnaroo, and in a tree.
This one time, I beat the abyss in a staring contest.
