About Me
CURRENT MISSION
to absorb as much information as possible about all things.
ABOUT ME
I was raised by a family of hard working boat builders here in Nova Scotia, and into a single-mother family. My mother, both a musician and filmmaker encouraged involvement in the arts, and this is largely responsible for the existence of my band and music.
In High School I became very good friends with a Japanese student living in Halifax learning English. He invited me to stay with his family in Japan, and after this two-week experience abroad, my perspective of the world was changed. I returned with an eagerness to be involved in discussion about the world, and all things global. This passion materialized into my nomination and selection as one of four Canadian youth to represent Canada in an International Model United Nations in Den Haag, The Netherlands.
After a lengthy learning experience both on a social and professional level regarding the world of politics, I returned with an even heightened sense of urgency for understanding global events and cultures. I enrolled in courses at The University of King's college with aspirations to become a Journalist, only to find that Political Science was more of my talent.
As of recently, I've ran in the Nova Scotia provincial election for The Green Party of Nova Scotia in my home riding. With the strong community support I was fortunate enough to run the 2nd most successful Green campaign in the province, and I plan to remain active in pushing for a Greener Nova Scotia on a political level.
As you can probably tell, my life has (for the past several years), consisted of many different responsibility and involvements. This kind of focus requires frequent travel to clear the mind of responsibility and truly experience the world.
I joined CouchSurfing because I think it is a great opportunity for people to see different parts of the world without relying on, (and feeding) the over priced industry of hotel and hostel accommodations.
PHILOSOPHY
I have a hard time using language to express philosophy, and thus I take to the writings of Ludwig Wittgenstein.
I think the modern era of religious bullying is repulsive, and I appreciate contemporary existentialism.
Most people wouldn't think of him as a philosopher, but I take strongly to a lot of the lyrics of Bob Dylan .. especially in the "Bring It All Back Home" and "Highway 61 Revisted" era. The idea that people have found a way to define you means that you must, with every day of your life try to confuse them to the point where they have no idea "what" or "who" you are anymore is an appealing thought to me.
I find definitions and labels to be cheapening -- and it is ironic that I am also involved with politics.
I find that this balance between two very different initiatives is a common battle within my own head.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
My couch surfing experiences have been slightly more formal than the ones offered here on the website. Often they've been friends, or friends of friends.
I've always enjoyed myself, whatever the case may be.
I really enjoy meeting people from other parts of the world and hearing their take on things, so people who are interested in the same conversations I think would be great.

Music, Movies, and Books
I honestly don't have a lot of time to watch films, as they're usually two hours or more in length, and there are a lot of other things I can do with that time.. but I enjoy at lot of Stanley Kubrick, the original Star Wars trilogy (with emphasis on Empire Strikes Back) and I am also a big fan of documentaries.
In terms of music, I like a lot of electronic music, along with a nice dose of indie rock. That isn't to say that I don't enjoy making a cup of coffee in the morning while listening to Miles Davis.. or cooking some meat on an open flame with some Lead Belly playing on a small stereo in the distance.
In terms of books, I like a lot of Albert Camus, Christopher Hitchens, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Fydor Dostoevesky and others.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
When in Kobe Japan, I went to the top of Rokko mountain and looked out among the mass of city.
I could see for hundreds of kilometers, this mass of buildings and lights. It was like nothing I have ever seen before. To see at once, thousands of people moving in different directions and lights turning on and off, and beside you a small tree blowing in the wind... a very incredible feeling.
