About Me

CURRENT MISSION

See Europe

ABOUT ME

I am a somewhat nerdy American with a fondness for literature, computers, internet humor, and good conversation. I'm not one to strike up a conversation on the bus with strangers, but with an introduction and a handshake I can talk to anyone.

PHILOSOPHY

I like meeting people and learning as much about everything as I can in the world. I do try to strike a balance between all things in life, but I am always interested in new people and new things.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I'm fresh on the scene right now, but I'm hoping to find some kind souls to host me and help me see Europe and I will then pass on the favor upon return to the United States.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I am a greenhorn.

Interests

Philosophy, books, poetry, programming, video games, music of all sorts (even rap and bluegrass), travel, and enjoying the company of other people.

Music, Movies, and Books

Books: A Game of Thrones, Ender's Game, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Crime and Punishment, The Stranger, The English Patient, Heart of Darkness, Mrs. Bridge, Neuromancer, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. I love books from any period and in almost any genre and I love talking about them. I admit there are a large number of classics that I haven't read though (they are on my back log though, honest!)

Movies: Apocalypse Now, The Big Lewboski, Pulp Fiction, The Matrix, Star Wars, Spirited Away, Lawrence of Arabia, The Royal Tenenbaums, Ghost in the Shell, Waking Life, and Koyaanisqatsi, just to name a few.

Shows: Firefly, Community, Arrested Development, Boardwalk Empire, and The Wire. I've also been tearing through Mad Men lately.

Music: Anamanaguchi, Andrew Bird, Angus and Julia Stone, Arcade Fire, Beirut, The Black Keys, Cake, The Chemical Brothers, Counting Crows, Daft Punk, Death Cab For Cutie, The Decemberists, Editors, Fleet Foxes, Flogging Molly, Franz Ferdinand, G. Love And The Special Sauce, Interpol, Iron and Wine, Juno Reactor, Kanye West, Kid Cudi, The Killers, Metric, MGMT, Miles Davis, Moby, Nujabes, Orbital, Pink Floyd, The Police, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Regina Spektor, Rush, The Shins, Spoon, Tool, Vampire Weekend, VNV Nation, and The XX just to name a few.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've done two amazing things. The first was travel halfway across the country to a city I had never visited (Chicago) to meet people I had only interacted with on the internet. It was like meeting a bunch of long lost friends.

The other was backpacking in Bryce Canyon, Utah last spring and seeing the harsh beauty of the wilderness including an hour long hike uphill through around a foot of snow.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can't play an instrument but I can introduce you to new music. I fancy myself a bit of a writer so I can help there. Most of my practical experience relates to computers but I also know quite a bit about history (especially American) and I enjoy learning about different world views and trying to tie them together.
