About Me

CURRENT MISSION

I'm a walker. Open the door of opportunities and get into it. I know I have the key.

ABOUT ME

The life of Han Baek Yu can be categoriezed into two large parts; before he came to the US and after that; Let us call it BC and AC repectively. In BC, he was so occupied to be constant winner in the score competition in Korea, and at the same time he was occupied to be free of the seemingly meaningless competition. Music was his almost the only exit from his battle field. After he got into the college he wanted, eventually after spending one more entire year after graduation, he was ready to be free, but he was not quiet there. Last year, he came to princeton as a visiting student, and it was more then just studying math in Princeton for a year.

The dramatic change and his recognition of his outgoing personality as a "walker" occurred in the place of New Orleans which he usually call a 'magical place'. He was dying of boredom stuck in his room during the winter vacation, and the extreme boredom made him to just fly to New Orleans, about which the the only thing he knew was it's FUN. Standing in the middle of an unfamiliar place without no friends, he had to break all his boundary and hesitancy. Surrounded by fantastic jazz music and lots of open-minded people, travelers from everywhere and so free hippie guys, it was possible for him to broke his shell. Indeed, he found it was so much fun! He realized that there'd are so many people who are also struggling to live on like him, so he was not alone, and indeed each of those people are so interesting and beautiful. He actually discovered the world outside of his shell.

So that made his recent trip to NYC. As usual, he went to there by him self with djembe. He actually got and practiced djembe to carry around when he travels. He enjoyed meeting lots of new people and jamming with lots of great musicians in washington square park. Music was just a perfect partner for traveling alone.

Now he is planning to go to New Orleans again as the epilogue of his American year. This time he is caring is djembe and an actuall drum set there!

PHILOSOPHY

Decarte is the one who influenced me the most in academically. His high standard of rigorous knowledge made him to deny all the uncertain contemporary studies and build a rational and logical system of his own knowledge and method of doing that.

I always try to be closer to the person I want to be; open-minded world citizen. I believe the best way of becoming that kind of person is just trying that; meet a person now. Go travel tomorrow. Learn new word and perspective from her you just met. You know, it's all practical matter. Being open and social cannot come from a serious philosophy, you only need the key to open the door in front of you.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Actually I'm just a beginner in this community. I think the easiest thing to participate is enjoying couch surfing myself. It is hard to host a surfer in the US but I will host couch surfers in Korea. It seems there are nit many couch surfers in Korea, because not much Koreans are good at speaking in English and used to couch surfing. So I hope i can help the surfers who come to Korea a lot.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Actually no. I met some friends who couch surfs and who were couch surfing during my traveling, and now I want to do that myself.

Interests

Knowledge with high perfection, which I usually find in mathematics.

Music, Movies, and Books

Dream theater have been the most influential musicians for me since I was 12 years old, when I started to actually listen to music. That's why my drumming style is so much alike Portnoy's-the drummer of the band. I also love to listen emotional music, like coldplay, Damien Rice. Jazz is also a huge part of my musical interest. Michel Petrucciani is my favorite Jazz pianist, and Dave Matthews Band is my favorite contemporary jazz band.

Shawshank Redemption is definitely the best movie. Seeking of freedom and vivid description of human nature was so great. Leon the professional is also a great movie, and I can't exclude the best comical movie about rock; This is Spinal Tap.

Godel, Esher, Bach influenced me so much. I loved to read Demian too.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I participated in two musical performance as a pit drummer in Princeton university; in Reefer Madness and You are a good man; charlie Brown. I enjoyed a lot and proud of being to active in short period of time. I also had a great live rock concert in club Cloister in Princeton with my dear rock band PURE(Princeton University Rock Ensemble). People enjoyed so much this show, and I enjoyed more then anyone. The jamming with great musicians in Washington Square Park in New York city was also one of my best moment. I just carried my djembe there, got to know some musicians, and jammed! People in the park enjoyed a lot.

Teach, Learn, Share

Of course! I can teach you drumming, djembe, a bit of guitar, a bit of jazz piano, and some amount of mathematics. And I'd love to share your serious thought such as the one about world, meaning of life, evolutionary theory etc.
