About Me

CURRENT MISSION

self-discovery through music, travel, conversation, and photography

ABOUT ME

Currently living in Minneapolis and working as a speech-language pathologist at a school for children who are deaf.

PHILOSOPHY

It sounds cliche, but my personal philosophy is to live each moment like it is the last. I certainly forget to do this a lot of the time, but I think that life is all about taking a deep breath and appreciating what surrounds you.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I haven't had the opportunity to host many couchsurfers, but I have been fortunate enough to surf in a wide variety of places.

I mainly use couchsurfing as a way to connect with like-minded people (musicians, photographers, bicyclists) while exploring new places and trying new things!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've surfed over 50 nights in cities all over Europe. Most of this surfing was accumulated with my ex-boyfriend using his CouchSurfing profile, so I don't have too many references on here yet.

I've only hosted two people because I've never lived in an apartment big enough for comfortable hosting. However, I plan to keep couchsurfing in mind the next time I'm apartment hunting because I would love to host more couchsurfers!

Interests

I've been playing music my entire life. It's a huge part of who I am. I am a singer and keyboard player, but I also play drums, guitar, mandolin, and the kalimba (all badly). I've toured the US and Europe with bands and am currently working on my first solo CD.

I love taking pictures. I'm not an expert with the camera, but I can't get enough of it. I love the way an image can capture a fleeting moment in time while reminding us that nothing looks the same twice. The world is constantly changing and evolving--it's a beautiful thing.

I also really like traveling. (Which is pretty obvious since I'm here on couchsurfing). Once you start traveling it's difficult to stop. There is always something to see, a culture to experience, a new person to meet.

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is probably my favorite movie, but I also love anything by Jim Jarmusch or Wes Anderson.

Music: Peter and the Wolf, Modest Mouse, Geographer, Foxygen, Animal Collective, Typhoon, Lake, Motorbikes, Old Age. I used to host a radio show, so I spent several years obsessively tracking artists and finding new music, but I no longer have my show, so I'm not as up to date with music as I used to be. That being said, I'm always game to learn about new music!

Books: I don't read as much as I would like to, but my favorite author is Kurt Vonnegut.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I'm cheating a little and sharing three things instead of just one. I couldn't pick!

One of the most memorable things that I've done is spent two months playing concerts around Europe. We played 28 shows in 11 countries in 2 months.

When I traveled to the outback in Australia, an Aborigine taught me how to throw a spear and a boomerang. A few days later I slept outside on a farm that was literally hundreds of miles away from civilization. I never knew the stars could be so bright.

When I was 15, my best friend and I traveled to Mexico. One night, after going to a club, we got really lost in a dangerous part of Mexico City. We spent a few hours wandering around before we found our way and it was one of the most thrilling nights of my life.

Teach, Learn, Share

I would like to meet other musicians so we can share our music and experiences with each other.

I've recently became very interested in photography, so I would absolutely love to meet other photographers who can give me tips and teach me about cameras.

Another topic of interest to me is communication. I've studied the subject at University and it will be the focus of my career. I'm especially interested in what happens when people live with communication disorders or have communication breakdowns. I'm also interested in alternative methods or forms of communication.

I want to learn about any hobbies that you might have and the specific subject that you studied/are studying. I have an extremely wide range of interests, so if it is interesting to you, chances are good that it is also interesting to me!

What I Can Share with Hosts

I'm happy to share music, stories, conversations, and drinks with my hosts. I'm also very knowledgeable about speech and how we learn to talk, so if that's of interest to you then allow me to share what I know. Other hobbies/areas of interest include photography, fashion, bicycling, sign language, sewing, antiquing, and crafting.
