Left home at 16, moved to a different country and have been pretty much on my own since then.
Not particularly broke or desperate for a place to stay. Just believe that the money to pay for a bed at night should rather be spent on having fun and eating good food with locals when traveling :) I barely use any hotel facilities when I travel anyway.
Have been making friends in my solo trips. Happy that many will be there for long.
