Overview
About Me
I moved to Weert in 2022 with my wonderful partner Laura, just after finishing my History PhD. I've started my own businesses and am slowly getting those going, and I've been keen on travel for about a decade now. In fact, one of my businesses, Train X Europe, is all about travelling across Europe without flying, so I'm putting that experience to good use!
I spent time working in the whisky industry in Scotland as well as studying history, so those are two things that say a lot about me. I'm always keen to learn from people, and I love music too. To be honest, I like to learn a little bit of everything! 'A jack of all trades, and master of none, is better than master of one'
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
I've had some great experiences Couchsurfing, both as a host and as a guest. Its also a good way to save on accommodation costs and push back on the negative effects of mass tourism and AirBnB in cities. You can get some real contact with locals and travellers alike. I'm looking forward to getting back to it!
Interests
I love playing bass and guitar, cooking, linguistics, and mainly learning about anything I don't already know well. Of course, whisky is also a passion for me, as my other business EuroWhisky is all about promoting the whisky made in Europe - its not just Ireland and Scotland doing it!

Music, Movies, and Books
I think film-wise, Spaghetti westerns, Studio Ghibli, Pixar are always good categories... I like a good musical too (Prince of Egypt is top tier). Into the Spiderverse, Grand Budapest Hotel, Mad Max Fury Road...
Nirvana, The Jam, Estrons, Everything Everything, Thin Lizzy, The Police, Prince, Wolf Alice...
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Last year I got to compete on University Challenge as captain of my team - I met amazing people doing it and really enjoyed the whole thing, I'll never forget it :)
Teach, Learn, Share
As well as sharing history and my weird, wide range of general knowledge, always happy to answer questions about Britain and Ireland, whisky and trains... me and Laura are a package deal, so she has a whole other range of experiences to talk about, especially about growing up in the USA.
I think the best part about Couchsurfing is that you kind of get a random perspective on the world from someone else; its like hitting shuffle on travelling almost! So I'm keen to learn from whoever I'm staying with - I've never met someone I didn't learn at least 1 thing from!
What I Can Share with Hosts
I'm always happy to cook, to help you or (if it helps more) to get out of the way - just generally do my bit to make hosting easy and repay the generosity! I've hosted myself, so I know sometimes you want to hang out and sometimes you need to go to work or just be left alone, its never an issue.
If you want to know more about either of my businesses, you're always welcome to a discount too ;)
