About Me

CURRENT MISSION

I'm riding from Mazatlan to Guatemala to Portland

ABOUT ME

Hello all!

I got a job about six months ago teaching English in Queretaro. I have a hard time staying in one place for too long, and have been tinkiering with the idea of cruising around Lartin Amrica for a while now. I met a guy who was riding from Los Angeles to Argentina, and decided to accompany him for abit on his journey south. I'll go to Guatemala for a bit, and from there start to head North, back home to Portland.

I've met a lot of great people during my trip. Here are some things I've learned:

Almost everyone watched Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain. Also Spiderman.

When you drink Mezcal, first you should take a lon whiff to get a feel for it. Then exhale, and take sip and swish it around for a few moments; you want to let it soak in. After you swallow take a deep breath, inhale as deeply as you can to fill out the experience.

I'm told that if you enjoy your mezcal in this manner, you can rest assured it will treat you well.

Hammocks are fantastic.

PHILOSOPHY

I try not too step on anyone's toes. I mean that in a mundane way and in the big scheme of things.

I lend a hand when I can.

I like to cook a lot of food and invite people over to eat and drink and chat.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I ride my bike from town to town, city to city, roadside to roadside. I share stories from my trip with my hosts, and they share a bit about their lives with me. It's been great. When I get back home I'll have a couch for all of those that have been so kind to help me on my journey, and for those passing through Portland who have stories to share and places to go.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

In oaxaca I stayed witha fellow named Daniel. He lives a neighborhood called volcanes near the edge of town. In the front of his place there's a tree whose canopy sits above the third story. Not far from the top of the canopy there is a tree house. It is without a doubt, the finest treehouse I have ever had the pleasure laying eyes upon.

Inside it there is a bed, microwave, coffeemaker, guitar(all tuned-up and ready to play), couch, and knicknacks. There's a poster of some dragons above the bed. You walk past the bed and enter onto a little balcony with some chairs and wee little table. From the balcony you look below and see the neighborhood, and where the houses end the hills begin. This is the edge of Oaxaca. The sun rises above the hills in the morning, and the light comes in through the sliding door and into the treehouse. This is a mighty fine way to wake up. It was cloudy in the morning when I stayed there though.

Interests

Like most surfers I love traveling and meeting new people.
I'm currently riding my bike through Mexico, and in a few months I'll head up north back to the States.
I think the sweetest part of riding your bike all day is getting really hungry, and then cooking up something tasty or finding some comida corrida or what have you. This is almost always the highlight of any given day.

I brought a guitar with me, because I like to play the blues, but she's having a hard time surviving the trip, so I'll have to say goodbye once I find a good home for her.

I also like long walks on the beach.

Music, Movies, and Books

Samurai movies are my latest kick. I'm pretty into Akira Kurosawa Also the Big Lebowski.

My musical taste keeps growing, but for the most part I like anything that isn't modern, with a few exceptions. On the road I've founf mself singing Soul Rebel by Bob Marley. If you're a Marley fan, I recommend checking out the album Soul Rebels (1970) if you haven't already. Also, Tghe Healer, by Erykah Badu, In walked Bud, by Monk and Coltrane (imagine it's your theme song for when your classy entrance when you're dressed to ther nines), and Ruby, My Dear, by the same two gents. Also, Introduction and Allegro by Ravel if you're trying to vibe out on some harp and some phat bass lines is nice. Some dj is gonna sample that song someday and have a hit.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I ran into a cow on my bike on the descent from Oaxaca to Tehuantepec. We're both fine.

Teach, Learn, Share

I hope to bring a guitar with me, I'm still trying to figure out how to transport it. I don't know a lot of songs, but maybe I know one that you don't that I cvould show you. Or we could just jam out. If I can bring it.

I can work on bikes just a little bit.

I'm learning Spanish. I'm down to practice English with whoever wants to.
