I'm studying to be a teacher and am working as a gym teacher for my work experience. I play basketball, coach youth basketball and write article and news pieces about basketball in Iceland. My last roommate said about me: Helgi is a fun and chilled out guy who is fun to hang out with. And you can put your Spotify on pause, he sings quite a lot but don't worry he is also very good.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I like meeting new people and helping them discover Iceland. I never thought I'd use it to travel, but I've recently been thinking of seeing more of the world and therefore meeting other hosts through couchsurfing!

Interests

I could probably tell you anything about Icelandic basketball, in addition to playing and coaching I volunteer as a reporter for the Icelandic basketball website, www.karfan.is, and do biweekly english spoken podcasts about the top men's and women's divisions. I absolutely love stand up comedy and have been lucky enough to see some great comedians live (Eddie Izzard, Jimmy Carr, Gabriel Iglesias, John Cleese) and own quite a few box sets.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've played competitive basketball against the best Icelandic basketball player of the modern era in a playoff game. And lost. He and his team were very good.
I've also been to see the Icelandic men's basketball team compete in two EuroBasket tournaments in a row (Berlin 2015 and Helsinki 2017).

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach you simple Icelandic phrases, good stretches and exercises (I am a licensed trainer) and be a great sounding board (I love listening to people talk about their passions).
I would love to learn something from you! I've as of late tried to employ this philosophy: Everybody can teach you something, if just give yourself time to find out what that something is. Whether it's fun trivia about your country, your culture or maybe even just some useful phrases in a foreign language, I'm willing to try and learn!
