About Me

DISCLAIMER ABOUT ENVIRONMENT AND HOSTING

Hi! Over the past years I've put a lot of thinking into the issue of traveling and its carbon emissions. Cheap flights are a wonderful thing to allow us to see friends and family far away, as well as allowing us to see much more places than previous generations could. But it also takes a heavy heavy toll on the environment. A transatlantic flight, or a few of them within Europe, correspond to more CO2e emissions in a single blow than that which we can emit PER YEAR at sustainable levels.

If you're looking to get hosted you'll greatly increase your chances by reaching Sweden without a flight, or possibly using a carbon offset solution. In case you don't address this issue in your request, I'll be pretty certain that you haven't bothered to read my profile and I won't have any qualms about saying no. Don't worry, apart from this, I'm a fun and relaxed guy. (In case you want to read more about this I did a longer Facebook post in English https://www.facebook.com/henrithunberg/posts/10160300153780691)

PHILOSOPHY

I believe in the values of the Effective Altruism movement. Pain and suffering are experiences that I perceive as incredibly more intense than joy. Bringing someone from 10 to 50 on a wellbeing scale of 0-100 is cheaper than taking most people from 90 to 91.

Which I guess makes me a utilitarian.

Heard someone say "Wisdom is being able to put language to your experiences". I enjoy people who reflect on what they do, consume and experience. Why am I doing this? What is the author trying to tell us? What am I hoping to get out of this trip?

Doing X is close to every time more fun and interesting than not doing X. Basically YOLO put in other words, please don't slut shame me.

Watch your thoughts, they become words;
watch your words, they become actions;
watch your actions, they become habits;
watch your habits, they become character;
watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Every trip I've made through Couchsurfing becomes so much richer than the experiences I have without. Although I might at times miss out on some of the "must-sees" of cities I am glad to replace that with new acquaintances and a look into the real vibes of cities.

Hosting has always been a pleasure as my guests have been interesting, humble and happy to spread joy – a great way to get influences from outside when you're not able to travel at the moment.

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies - Examples are La vita è bella, Hævnen, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Her. Reasonably well versed with famous actors/directors, old classics and non-comedies. Still hungry for more?
Ratings for all movies I've ever seen: http://www.filmtipset.se/yourpage.cgi?member=78123

Music - Mostly instrumental music to accompany work, primarily classical Russian composers or post-rock like Explosions in the Sky. Occasionally other styles like jazz (Chet Baker is a favorite), Singer/songwriter (Damien Rice), Chamber pop (Oscar and the Wolf)...

Books - Run-of-the-mill non-fiction reader with a lean toward pop-psych that sometimes annoys me with shaky claims. E.g. Moral Animal, about evolutionary psychology, had some impact on my reasoning.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Sailing through the Caribbean during night, accompanied by dolphins and navigating by the starlit sky.

Hitchhiked from Sweden to Rome and back.

I'm not the biggest nature guy, but yes waiting for the sunrise to pop up above the Georgian mountainside and hit the small chapel to instantly make the world warm and soft at ~6am was quite something!

Teach, Learn, Share

Teach - Some basic guitar. How to say "I speak [insert language]" in its own language. Serbo-croatian, Portoguese, French, Italian, Swedish, Norwegian, English, Kurdish, Arabic, Romanian, Polish.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Vegan cooking with tastes approved by grandmothers and nephews alike
