I like to spend time with couchsurfing guests and hosts. But that's not a must because if I am hosting, you are probably seeing me during my daily life which means more working than hanging out time. I just like creating profiles.

Among many other reasons (e.g. cheaper and more sociable), Couchsurfing is also a political statement. In times where tourism has become a global mass industry, selling housing space to tourists intensifies the rising of rents. In comparison, sharing private living room is a decent contribution against the reduction of affordable rents in big cities.
