About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To be able to read German novels in the next 6 months.

ABOUT ME

I grew up as an expatriate in Bahrain as my dad worked in the oil industry there and my mum was a teacher. I lived in Bahrain from the age of 3 to 14. It was in Bahrain that I got my first taste for experiencing a different culture. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to travel quite extensively when I was young and my interest has continued to grow.

I have just moved to Germany from the UK and am spending my days at the Institut für Sprachen. I recently completed my PhD on Jamaican history and am working on several projects to do with food security in the Caribbean. I am lucky enough to do work that allows me to travel fairly often.

PHILOSOPHY

I believe everyone should try to open their minds and accept people for who they are. I believe travel is the perfect way to do this.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I embrace experincing other cultures and staying with people from the country I am in. I want to continue staying with local people and also would like to return the favour. I believe very strongly in cultural exchange and learning from other countries.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I have stayed with several people in the United States and the Caribbean. It has been a great experience so far!

Interests

I have a huge passion for history, in particular Caribbean history. I also love to learn about the history of the country I am travelling to.

When I am not busy at university I enjoy travelling (of course), reading, watching movies, football, cooking, and meeting new people.

I also like to try to cook food from different parts of the world. Part of the experience of travelling for me is trying the local cuisine.

Music, Movies, and Books

Some of my favourite books include; East of Eden, One Hundred Years of Solitude, All Souls Rising, Gone with the Wind, Roots. When I travel to a place I like to read a novel which is set there, for example, I recently travelled to Prague and read No Saints or Angels by Ivan Klima.

Some of my favourite movies include; Inglorious Basterds, Walk the Line, Evita. I like most types of movies but particularly drama and musicals.

I like lots of different types of music, if I go out with my friends I like music that I can dance to. At home, I listen to music such as Johnny Cash, Courtney Love and Lady Gaga.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Biking through the Oriente in Cuba was pretty amazing!

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach people how to cook traditional British food (also some Mexican, Caribbean and Italian).
