About Me

Updating the CouchSurfing account after another several year hiatus...

I'm a 36 year old native Californian living in the Netherlands for the last 10 years. Other than the fact that I find myself using British English phrases at times it has been a great experience. Living in such a flat, densely populated country has made me even more appreciative of mountains, open spaces, and forests.

Not a smoker but don't mind if others are.

Current Mission: Soak up the last bits of awesomeness of my one year trip with my (now) fiance before returning to the Netherlands and finding a job.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm on CouchSurfing for a few reasons:
1) Hotels are super impersonal and I'd rather a sleeping pad in a living room or backyard to a queen bed in some cookie cutter hotel room.
2) To meet people while traveling. Obvious statement, but tips from locals totally beat guidebooks and random Google searches.
3) To share my experiences with those who care to ask. I have travelled a bit, so I have some knowledge that can be dropped.

Interests

Outdoor recreation. Beer (home)brewing. And the generic one: traveling.

  • beer
  • traveling
  • socializing
  • homebrewing
  • outdoor activities
  • rock climbing
  • mountains

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies:
Sergio Leone Spaghetti Westerns, Top Gun, The Shawshank Redemption, Hot Dog the Movie and most crappy 80s movies about skiing/surfing/skating.

Music:
Open to most genres. Not the biggest Pop fan, but there are definitely some guilty pleasures in there.

Books:
The Dark Tower series by Stephen King is amazing. The Harry Potter audio books, read by Jim Dale, are the perfect commute distraction. The nerdy but awesome Wheel of Time and The Stormlight Archive series.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Receiving a Slovenian baptism on the top of Triglav, the country's highest peak. Basically some guy spanks you with a switch or, as was my case, a bunched up climbing rope brought up specifically for that purpose.

Teach, Learn, Share

While still quite amateur, I've been home brewing beer for the last few years. When you wanna have a nerded out conversation about beer, I'm almost certainly up for it.

I'm also glad to tell you all about an expats experiences living in the Netherlands for a decade.

Countries I’ve Visited

Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Ecuador, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Laos, Latvia, Lithuania, Mexico, Monaco, Morocco, North Korea, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Tunisia, Uganda, Ukraine, United Kingdom
