About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To learn German and to come up with an awesome research topic!

ABOUT ME

I would say that I'm very friendly and that I genuinely love people, though I'm a little shy. I am always in a good mood, and harmony is extremely important to me. I am very curious and love learning, and I have a number of unusual (well, my friends and family say they are) interests. I'm the sort of person who ends up doing a whole pile of extra activites because I love to help people, and because I suck at saying no.

I have been studying Linguistics and Classics (Greek and Latin) at the University of Canterbury, and have spent a year at Uppsala Universitet studying Indo-European Linguistics as an exchange student. I have also been learning Old English (not Shakespeare or Chaucer. Much older!) from a retired lecturer.

PHILOSOPHY

Treat everybody with respect and just keep on doing what is important to you.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I love to host when I can, and I want my surfers to have a great experience.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

It has been very positive so far. I have hosted a great bunch of surfers who have all had quite different outlooks on the world. They have taught me a lot about their countries and about travel in general. By being a host I have also learnt much about being a surfer. I now have a much clearer sense of what I must do to show the derserved respect to my hosts.

Interests

I'm interested in a lot of things, but Languages (Ancient languages in particular) excite me the most.
I enjoy making music. I play the piano, trumpet and guitar (though all of them, sadly, not that well).

Music, Movies, and Books

When I'm not reading non-fiction, I'm often reading books in the fantasy genre. There are scores of authors in that genre I like, but my favourite would have to be Tolkien. In the crime genre my favourite is Arnaldur Indriðason.

I once listened to a lot of classic rock, but I haven´t listened too much lately. Pink Floyd and Tom Waits are among my favourite groups/artists. I have been delving into folk music a little too. Though I don't really listen to too much metal, I am quite partial to the Faroese metal band, Týr. I also listen to a lot of classical music. My favourite composer is Mendelssohn. For some reason (probably because it is old) I am interested in Renaissance music and have been learning a few Renaissance pieces on the piano.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Spent a year studying in Sweden.

Teach, Learn, Share

I would love to teach you any of my interests. I probably couldn´t teach you Old English, for example, in two or three days, but I could tell you some interesting things about it. Also, if it´s you goal to learn English, I´d be happy to help.

Countries I’ve Visited

Australia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom

Countries I’ve Lived In

New Zealand, Sweden
