One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

While lost and confused at a ferry port late at night trying to catch a bus home, the local "Preman" (members of an Indonesian organized gang, encompassing street level criminals up through crime bosses) were trying to extort a large sum of money from us. Each bus driver we encountered denied us entry unless we paid the Preman. We also witnessed 2 foreigners (father and son from Thailand), also experiencing the same situation. While I went to talk to the father and son, Wulan went to seek help and assistance. After asking numerous people for help, she was then approached by a kind stranger who quickly got all of us (father and son included) into a bus and out of that area. When we finally reached our accommodation, well past midnight, we found out that the father and son had nowhere planned to stay so without hesitating we invited them to stay the night. Our late night dinner was a hot spicy stew Wulan's mom had cooked and packed for us, along with a nice short chat and our exhaustion finally took over.

The next day I took the father and son to a village that I knew, and helped them find comfortable and affordable accommodation during their travels. To this day we still keep in touch with the son, Tah, and eagerly wait until we meet him and his father again in their home country of Thailand.

This is a special story for us because it is about being helped by a stranger and helping strangers.
