I do not have couchsurfing experience through this web page, but I've been hosting friends and visiting them mostly in France, Germany, Netherlands and Australia.

I spent one weekend with a very modest thai family in the country side in the south of Thailand. We went searching for clams to the river, cooked delicious local foods, made jokes without a common language and spent the night in their huts.
