One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I think the most inspiring experience of my life was in Chiapas, Mexico. I visited a Zapatista village and got the opportunity to talk to the local leaders. They were sitting behind a desk in a small office building, the walls covered with pictures of Che, of Mexican revolutionary heroes, of childrens paintings and of political posters opposing to discrimination. Every square centimetres were coverd. The faces of the Zapatistas were covered by scarfs, only dark, serious eyes looking back at me, deepening my understanding of the seriousity of their situation. We talked for an hour, in formal language, guns over knees on the other side of the desk. They answered all my questions, and thanked me for my support. I told them about Norway, about our democracy, equity, labor rights, farmers support. And I told them about what we still have to fight against; racism, women being discriminated and capitalism earning too much power. Before I left the officers, they gave me the pep-talk of my life. "You go home and keep fighting. As long as these problems are still in your country, the democracy is really not a democracy at all. You're doing an important job". You're doing an important job... they, the Zapatistas, fighting with guns in hands, risking lives, losing friends and family for the sake of their right to live, they have the hearts and the minds to support my meaningless fight, in the wealthiest country in the world.. So it's not meaningless, I guess...
Teach, Learn, Share
Ingrid: I'm one of those people who are quite good at doing many things, but not extremely good at anything.. I have managed well like that, but sometimes I wish I had that one special thing that I just rule in. Maybe you can teach me? I'm happy to learn anything. And learning and teaching is a great way of getting to know each other!
