关于我

CURRENT MISSION

For years and years we waited / And now the time has come / To leave these barren lands / Towards new horizons. (Van Canto, "The Mission")

ABOUT ME

I'm a friendly (or so I hope ;), honest, open-minded and helpful guy trying to enjoy live, seeing interesting places and meeting interesting people. :) (Gee, that sounds just like an ad...)

I love to explore countries and their people on the saddle of my touring bike.
For my bike tours I concentrated on Germany and Central Europe so far, as I thought one should first get to know the area where one grew up before reaching out for more exotic destinations.

So besides doing some shorter few-days bike trips up to 500 km through eg. France or Germany, I made two pretty long tours - one along the river Rhine in 2009, starting in Switzerland, touching Lichtenstein, crossing Austria, France, Germany and finally the Netherlands before arriving at the North Sea.
The second large tour took place in 2010 when I rode down the river Danube together with first two and later one friends. This tour started in the Black Forest in Germany and took us through Austria, Slowakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia and Bulgaria to Romania where we reached the Black Sea after about 5 weeks on our bikes.

Unfortunately, I virtually had no holidays in 2011, but we're already thinking about our next large bike tour were we want to cross New Zealand from the north to the south. Unfortunately, we won't be able to keep the original schedule, January/February 2013, but maybe 2014 will work out - and maybe we could try to finish the EuroVelo 6 from Germany to the Atlantic in France before. ;)

When I'm not riding my bike ;), I'm a self-employed IT consultant and software developer who runs a small IT service company in Germany.

PHILOSOPHY

If everyone would show just a little more fairness, truth and honesty for each other, we would not have a lot of problems we have to struggle with today.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I offer two couches in Aachen and Böblingen (both in Germany) and I'm happy to show people around at both places or simply to have interesting chats with guests.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I already surfed a few times so far and also hosted guests once, and every experience with other couch surfers has been a positive one.

I love

- riding bicycle
(I think I already said so, didn't I? ;)

- riding motorcycle
(apparently, I like machines with just two wheels ;)

- doing sports (jogging, wight lifting and, since
recently, indoor climbing) (Yet I've no talent for
any kind of physical activity which requires quick
hand-eye-coordination. ;)

- hanging out with friends

- listening to music (Melodic-, Symphonic- and Gothic-
Metal as well as Techno/Trance)

- reading (no specific genre - I like fantasy, sci-fi,
crime thrillers, historical novels, ...)

- watching movies (video or cinema)

- working on my Computer and with Open Source Software
and Free Software (of which I like the philosophy) in
particular - I'm a convinced but not fanatic (and not
missionary ;) Linux user

我做过的一件不可思议的事情

Three years ago or so I rode through a nearby forest on my bike in the middle of a clear summer new moon night. Everything was pitch-black around me, my bike's lamp being the only light source around.

Then I just accidentally looked up to the sky - and noticed two things: First of all I noticed the bright, twinkling stars in the otherwise black sky, second it instantly became clear to me that I had not really watched the night sky for (literally) *years*...

Having studied and lived in the city of Aachen for about a decade back then, I only knew the night sky with the light pollution from a mid-sized (or maybe even big, at least by German standards) city, where its never really dark in the night and you can only notice a few of the bightest stars - if you even raise your head and actually look at the sky...

It was all different there on the clearance in the dark forest, and I just stopped, shut of my bike's lights and simply stood there and watched the sky for several minutes, before I continued to ride home.

This may sound ridiculous, but it taught me to look for the unnoticed beauty in your everyday's surroundings, which is something I'm trying to do since that night. Sometimes you do not even have to travel at all to get amazing impressions.
