What I Can Share with Hosts

You can choose to be a volunteer program at island , (Island conservation and eco-tourism project in Pulau Bidan, Kedah, Malaysia)

Extra information about island conservation n volunteer program

We are a group of young people trying to contribute to the conservation of natural biodiversity and the empowerment of rural communities in Lembah Bujang, Kedah in the north of Malaysia.

We have been helping a mangrove regeneration project in Sungai Merbok that flows into the sea of Selat Melaka. The project was started by a local villager almost ten years ago.

In the village of Kampung Bujang, we are trying to allevitate the problem of poverty through education by supporting a free school ran by a local teacher, providing free tuition classes to the children and young adults in the subjects of Bahasa Malaysia, English, Mathematics and Science.

Now we are building a community in the island of Pulau Bidan, off the coast of Tanjung Dawai. The island was unpopulated and only occasionally visited by local fishermen. We want to protect and conserve the natural ecosystem while trying to live off the land and in harmony with it, applying the principles of permaculture and ecology as our guidance.

We are travellers of the earth, coming back home to grow our roots into the land. We want to learn how live and work together for a same passion and dream. We hope to gather knowledge and be able to pass it on to others. We hope to make an impact on the conservation of Lembah Bujang and promote it as a location of eco-tourism, culture and history, while helping the local communities grow.

Volunteer work needed.

1. Teaching in the village.

2. Carpentry and construction of structures for projects in the village/on the island.

3. Working with aquaculture and marine culture including fish and oyster farming.

Type of accommodation.

Camping, dorm. Separate male and female accommodation available.

Extra information.

Volunteers will stay in the village or on the island, depending on work availability. On their free time, volunteers can immerse in local culture, explore local villages, historical locations and natural attractions.

The area of Lembah Bujang is a historical location of the ancient civilisation of Kedah Tua, dating back approximately 1500 years ago. Archeological work is in progress, discovering remains of old buildings and tools.

The island of Pulau Bidan has an almost untouched natural ecosystem waiting to be explored. A quiet stripe of beach provides blissful leisure.

Transport can be arranged to provide boat pick-up from Tanjung Dawai.

Travelling and tour services also provided. We are experienced in travelling advice and service.

We will provide food and local style dishes (whenever available) for a daily fee of MYR20.

Maximum working hours.

Volunteers are expected to work for 4-5 hours per day for six days a week, for a minimum of two weeks.
