Why I’m on Couchsurfing
Because it's the best mix of traveling in the "real country" (by meeting locals) and making new friends.
Although I usually travel with too big a group to be hosted by anything less than as professional establishment, I sometimes do travel alone, and all the great story my couchsurfing-veteran friends told me so many great story and new friendships and warm welcomes far away from the polished circuits of tourism that I finally decided I wanted my share of those.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
When I was in Beijing with my friend, we intended to spend several days hiking in the ruined parts of the wall. We wanted to spend one night on the wall, but our hostel was not renting camping equipment, and the organized tours were crazily expensive.
Then, as we were on the common area in the evening, discussing the program of the following days, this Malaysian girl came up to us, asking if we wanted to go hike and sleep on the wall with her, as she was traveling alone and was looking for companions. When we pointed we didn't have equipment, she calmly answered we didn't need any, as we would be sleeping in a tower and our backpacks would provide great pillows.
As the Wall normally closes at 5pm (it is of course strictly forbidden to sleep there), we had to walk quite a while along it, fending the jungle-like bushes, before we found a climbable tower.
Even though it wasn't the most comfortable night of my life, it was a one of a kind experience!
Funny enough, we met 10 times more people during the evening and all through the night than we had in the day… and I was really really surprised when I woke up for sunrise and found myself surrounded with grandpa photographers !
