Music, Movies, and Books

* I have seen woefully few movies, but I do enjoy silent movies (Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin), Busby Berkley musicals, Reefer Madness, anything that will make me laugh and/or think. I tend to shy away from serious drama and horror.

* I like lots of different kinds of music: classical (Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, etc.), disco, Broadway musical, jazz, opera, samba, fiddling, artists like Regina Spektor, Ben Folds, Billy Joel (haters back up), the Beatles, Barry Manilow, MC Solaar, Madonna, Queen, a capella music; I love upbeat music with a good bass line - something that makes me want to move and/or sing.

* I thoroughly enjoy reading. A Confederacy of Dunces, Middlesex, The Well of Lonliness, Billy Collins'/Ragan Fox's poetry, plays, cookbooks, how-to books, photography monographs, (auto)biographies (Malcolm X's biography was great), and the Harry Potter series come to mind.
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and Maria Callas' novel/autobiography are on my list of things to read soon.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I'm constantly amazed by the outpouring of musical and artistic expression to be found in New York City's subways. My spirit is always lifted by subway musicians.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can read music, sing, play the violin, piano, and electric bass, cook and bake rather well, and I can utilize American Sign Language at a beginner's level. Also, knitting is my new best friend. I would be more than happy to share my knowledge in any of these areas, and any others that I can't think of right now.

I would love to learn how to play the theramin and the ukulele, and I always love hearing people's life stories - the twists, the turns, the decisions made along the way.
