About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Waiting for the snow to fall...

ABOUT ME

My girlfriend Ahoo -- like Yahoo, without the Y -- is Iranian and I am American. We met in Sweden while suffering through grad school in a Scandinavian environment and have been following each other around ever since.

After getting completely toasted by academics, I pursued a short professional career playing football/calcio/soccer in Sweden and Albania. After a nasty knee-injury, I now consider myself a full-time flanuer though I pay the bills as a freelance science writer with some consultant work thrown in, so I have plenty of free time to hang out and explore the city.

I am an ecologist/environmental scientist by training and can bore your for hours about plants and animals if you ask me questions, especially after a few beers, which I am always up for.

Ahoo is a zoologist by training but is now doing her phd studies in Sociology at the University of Milan. She works with climate change and international migration issues.

Ahoo cooks some nice persian food and I am always an aspiring vagabond of the kitchen where I generally manage to butcher traditional foods with a desperation that results in something tasty...no one has ever complained yet!

PHILOSOPHY

Don't be fooled by money. These are just numbers. Being self-owned is a state of mind.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

When I have a place to offer the doors are always open to meet new people. .

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Way too many to list since each experience has led to an incredible number of fantastic stories and friendships.

But one of the best is that I was considered a highly suspicious neighbor in my Nicaraguan community in Granada, Nicaragua due to the large number of guests that I had coming in and out every night. In part, I was taking as many surfers as I could to keep the local cougars -- slang for old women that like young men --away from me, but I developed a bit of a reputation in the town that followed me around.

Interests

Mountains, cooking, Flatfooting, football (not american -- Forza Inter), snowboarding, astronomy, photography, reading and VOLCANOES

Sleeping outside near rivers, streams, lakes or oceans.

Riding with Napolitani drivers in Naploli.

Beer and reptiles, not necessarily together.

I deeply value napping.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: Bluegrass music from the heart of Appalachains! But also The Congos, Fabrizio de Andre, Mohsen Namjoo, Albarosie, Mason Jennings and everything in-between...See more of my musical taste here: (http://8tracks.com/demiansinclair)

Books: anything by henry miller, snyder or kundera never get old; strindberg, fonte, saramango and coetzee are frequent reads as well.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

how to say?

Teach, Learn, Share

I worked for many years as an environmental educator using snakes, lizards, turtles and amphibians to teach ecological principles.

I also love fish and water systems and managed several marine aquariums and designed a 10,000 liter display highlighting the evolution of rivers in Appalachia.

I've taught Astronomy courses and worked at the Mt. Lemon Observatory in Arizona. One of my favorite jobs was working in a planetarium where I napped under the stars whenever I was not busy teaching kids about the wonders of the universe.

I also own a 1/2 meter telescope that I would be glad to share on a cloudless night in the Appalachian mountains with surfers -- assuming I ever end up back home...
