About Me

CURRENT MISSION

to have earrings from all over the world

ABOUT ME

_all_ about me... some things i like are demography, wine (but don't ask me to detect 'em subtle, sophisticated flavors in it. my favorite are "red" and "white". that's it!), bazaars/markets, squat toilets, open source software, sewing, tea (and tea houses. and dipping bread/biscuits/cookies in my tea), lungi and mountain scenery. and staying late at work so i can sing along with my earphones on, without anyone discovering how badly i suck... as for things i dislike, coffee (it's bitter, you guys!), cab drivers (a monstrous species), chocolate (coffee wannabe!), scarlet red (only suitable for traffic signs), cobblestones (no, they're not romantic, they're just useless and annoying) and tying shoelaces.

PHILOSOPHY

trying to figure one out

Music, Movies, and Books

music: Dead Can Dance (love them), jazz, electro, classical, metal, ethnic, medieval, punk, swing, etc. actually my musical taste is pretty eclectic. you can check it out on http://www.last.fm/user/iulia/ (oh, and i listen to Malayalam or Punjabi radio while reviewing scientific articles. but that's my dirty little secret); movies: Ingmar Bergman's movies, Kim Ki-duk's movies, American Beauty, El Laberinto del Fauno, The Big Lebowski, Cidade de Deus, Persepolis, The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds, Crossing the Bridge: The Sound of Istanbul; books: Le Petit Prince, Brick Lane, The White Tiger, Life after God, The Woman Who Walked into Doors, books by Umberto Eco, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Erich Maria Remarque, George Orwell, Albert Camus... and many more

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

haven't really done any amazing things (gee, that sounds lame!). i saved a five-day-old kitten from dying of dehydration in Dakar, if that counts. he's big boy now and traveled around quite a bit.

Teach, Learn, Share

i'm not very skilled (but i can make decent pizza - thanks Jeri!). however, i could teach you about the age model of migration. or about why the second demographic transition is in fact another stage in the first one (i'll be convincing). and if that's not exciting enough, i can tell you why you're actually not getting as old as you imagine. how's _that_ for an adventure?!
