Overview
About Me
Documentary Filmmaker, Digital Nomad, Vandweller.
I moved from Winnipeg, MB to study film at Ryerson University in Toronto, Ontario. It was an excellent experience, allowing me to meet new people and travel to new places.
I have since completed my BFA and now work abroad as a documentary filmmaker. I try to live my life to the fullest, working full time from my mobile studio.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
My favourite aspect of travelling is the people you meet along the way. While I enjoy site seeing and exploring, the people you're with are truly what makes the experience memorable. Through couch surfing I've met some incredible people and have learned a ton of things about the places I'm visiting.
Interests
Filmmaking: I've always had my hands on cameras ranging from Handy-cams, DSLRs, Bolex 16mm film all the way to ARRIs. Super grateful to have the chance to pursue this passion as a career. Really enjoy watching/talking about films as well.
Photography: I enjoy taking photographs of the places I visit, although lately I’ve been trying to see them with my own eyes and not through a cellphone or viewfinder. It’s been a tricky balancing act.
Music: I really enjoy jamming on the Guitar, Harmonica and sometimes ukulele (way easier to travel with :P) Want to learn the mandolin at some point.
The Outdoors: I spent a lot of time outside while growing up. I enjoy Canoeing, Hiking, Fishing, and Camping in general, whether that be in a tent, hammock or other.
I’ve spent six collective months sailing in the Mediterranean so I'm up to talk about boats (although I'm admittedly not as knowledgeable on the subject as I should be :P).
Tech: I'm a bit geeky. Only learned a bit of Java and HTML in highschool/university, but if I wasn't in film I would definitely pursue computer science/engineering further. Web/Graphic Design is also something that interests me.
Music, Movies, and Books
First films that come to mind are Inception, Memento (any Chris Nolan film really), Moonrise Kingdom, Rushmore (Wes Anderson films are free game), Wild, Into the Wild, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Blue Jay... I think Free Solo is my favourite doc.
Preferred music genres would be Indie, Folk, Acoustic, Americana. (Dan Mangan, Mumford and Sons, Vance joy, Mother Mother, Gregory Alan Isakov, Leif Vollebekk, John Craigie are a few bands/artists that come to mind...).
Enjoyed A Visit From the Goon Squad, The River Why, The Brothers Karamazov, White Teeth, Into the Wild, The Alchemist, Letters to a Young Poet... Trying to read more now that I’m done school. Listening to audiobooks has been a good start.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
In May-June 2015 I lived/sailed on a 90-foot gaff-rig schooner in Greece.
In May 2016 I hitchhiked across Canada from Halifax Nova Scotia to Vancouver British Columbia in 12 days.
In July 2017 I rode the rails cross country on the VIA Canada 150 pass, meeting some pretty rad people along the way.
In April-August 2018 I joined Floating Orb Productions on SV Ariandrhod making short documentaries while sailing the Mediterranean.
In July 2019 I purchased/self converted a ‘75 Chevy G20 into a mobile production studio from which I travel/work.
In 2020 I intend to embark on an Atlantic Crossing with the crew of SV Arianrhod.
