One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I don't know if i'd say it was amazing but kind of a funny story...
Christmas day 2014 i woke up in my tent camping on the island of St John in the US virgin islands. I went for a hike up the trails of the nearby look out point for a final view as that day i was leaving the USVI headed for mainland US.
The walk took longer than expected and i had a flight to catch. I had to run all the way down the wet slippery rocky trails back to camp site on Cinnamon bay beach, grab my stuff and make my way to the camp ground reception to try and get the the dock (1/2 way around the island).
It was christmas day so ofcourse the taxis wern't really running so i was informed by reception person to try waiting out by the road and hitch hiking. Id never hitched hiked before but i coudn't miss my plane so off i went.
I waited on the road for a while and a taxi came along who offered to take me part of the way as he was prebooked on a job already. I got out of his taxi half way up a hill in my shorts, singlet, thongs (flip flops) and my back pack and he said if i was still here on his way back he would pick up. A few minuted passed and at the top of the hill a jeep pulled out and waited a few minutes... i thought maybe they were waiting to see if i needed a lift. I ran up the hill and went and spoke to a nice american family who were just checking their map. I asked if i could jump in for a lift, they said no and drove off. 30 meters away they stopped and motioned for me to come and join them as they had changed their mind.
They dropped me near the dock and by this point i only had a few minutes to get to the boat as it was leaving shortly, so i ran! I ran through the gridlock morning island traffic for about 1/2 a mile and just made it the boat. There was a larger typical islander looking man waiting next to it and so as i arrived puffing and panting asked in what I swear was the most stereotypical islander accent i've ever heard " what choo runnin for man?" I said isnt the boat meant to leave in about 30 seconds. He laughed and said "nah we're on Island time". The boat left about 15 minutes later.
I then got off the boat (water taxi) on the Island of St. Thomas, got another taxi to the airport. Got in some trouble with the airport customers/ border people for having cuban cigars and trying to take them in to the US, after that was resolved i almost missed my flight, so i was that person, the last one to get on the plane after everyone was already seated. Given it was christmas day that was about 7 -8 people of a 737, we took off and flew to NYC.
Arrived NYC for my stop over on my way to Las Vegas. Had about 4 hours in the air port, nothing really untoward happened and so then i got my next flight that evening to Vegas ( which was packed) i just think it strange the first flight that day was empty.
Anyway so we touch down in Vegas at about 11:30 pm and I walk out of the airport and wait in the cab line still in my shorts, thongs and singlet and the snow started to fall...
Anyway so thats my story of my crazy christmas day of '14, as i said i don't know if its amazing but when i tell it people usually look pretty amazed :)
