About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Get outta school

ABOUT ME

I joined Peace Corps after college and was initially posted to Guinea in West Africa. There were some pretty scary riots in '09 and I was evacuated and re-assigned to Uganda in East Africa. There I taught math at a secondary school for two years...it was tough it was fun it was awesome. Joining Peace Corps may perhaps be the best decision I've made thus far. Now I'm finishing up grad school in the Bay Area.

PHILOSOPHY

I follow my interests where they lead me and everything seems to come together.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Hmm...The first thing that jumps to mind was an overland trip in Dec 2011 from Cape Town back to Kampala. I went quad biking in the Namib Desert with my friend Brennan. The next day we rented a car with some other Peace Corps friends and drove out deeeeeeeeeeeep into the desert where we watched the sunrise from the massive Dune 45. The whole trip was incredible and that was certainly one of the highlights.

In Uganda I lived and worked for two years in a small village in the north. I became good friends with the community generally and specifically my fellow teachers. I was joking with them that one day I was going to tackle one of the corrupt politicians (there are lots of them in Uganda!) when they came campaigning for votes. Mr. Okema (the fine art teacher and a great friend) thought this was really funny and drew a creative composition from his imagination. He gave it to me as a farewell gift when I left the village in tears and it very well may be my favorite travel keepsake. He's INCREDIBLY talented and his drawings remind me of the people experience that was my Peace Corps service.
