Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've been surfing and hosting for almost 10 years. I'm amazed by how genuine the friendships I've made through CS have been and how much they've enriched my experiences domestically and abroad.

Interests

What isn't interesting?!
* Hiked through the Dolomites, the Picos de Europa, and along the Appalachian Trail
* Learned to make pate, brew beer, and bake bread
* I love cheese
* no really, I love cheese
* One of the best parts of traveling is learning the local language/dialect so that the locals can laugh at me. (My Catalan isn't so great)
* So, one time I thought it would be a good idea to plant morning glory... the war is still raging, the casualties are numerous, but Victory garden will win in the end.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

My sister and I had a grandma we adored. Whenever we are getting a bit out of sorts, we remind each other, "Be like Isabel." Each grandchild got to spend a summer with her in Boston and The Cape all by themselves when they turned 13. That summer was magical; I rode my first non-school bus, ate my first croissant, and learned the importance of politics and world events. I think of her everytime I go to a museum, everytime I attempt speaking in a foreign language (she was adorable and REALLY thought I was fluent in many), and whenever I travel. When she was a widow, she never stopped taking classes, working on pet projects, and exploring; proving that your life is what you make of it.
Her last international trip was to Greece. There was an incident where she stumbled, fell, and hurt herself on some ancient ruins; but she kept going (proving that family clumsiness and tenacity are genetic). No broken-ankle/foot was going to stop an 85 year old woman on a mission to learn and absorb some culture, damn it!! When she returned home, she never talked about the injury, instead she regaled us with stories of what she saw, what she experienced, and who she met.
In 2015, I visited Greece and the Acropolis on mu first solo international trip, I couldn't help but think of her, all she taught me, and all I hope to continue to learn.
