About Me

CURRENT MISSION

to learn and explore

ABOUT ME

22-year old guy currently living in Bend until the end of the summer of 2012; between undergraduate and graduate education.

Love hiking in the outdoors of the PNW, raised in rural Oregon and Idaho. Huge into biology/politics/history.

Always down for a lively conversation over some brew or food, a trek through a local forest or prairie-land, or just hanging out.

PHILOSOPHY

Secular humanist.
I think trying to define your personal philosophy anytime before the end of your life is premature. Basically, I try to make the better place in any way I can. Be good to those in your world, and everything else will follow.

Interests

Hiking, fly-fishing, backpacking, evolutionary biology, ecology, landscape photography, writing, botany, systematics, paleontology, politics, history, East Asian and Southeast Asian history, microbrewing

Music, Movies, and Books

I have a penchant for alternative, old school trip-hop, downtempo, reggae, shoegaze, indie, folk, New Age. Essentially everything but country and rap, really.

I love movies by the Coen brothers, and sci-fi films. I'm into surrealist film and independent film. I try to hit up local film festivals whenever I can. Not huge on senseless action flicks. I do have an unashamed love of romantic comedies.

Some favorite books of mine include 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance', 'Things Fall Apart', 'The Wild Trees', 'The God Delusion', 'An Empire Wilderness', 'Guns, Germs, and Steel'. I like pop science, and science fiction above anything else. Oh, and satire.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Hiked all over the Olympic Peninsula

Teach, Learn, Share

I know quite a lot about the natural world; biology (particular evolutionary biology and ecology), PNW geology, botany and native plants, Oregon geography, paleontology, some biochemistry, etc. I hope to provide a mechanistic and potentially under-appreciated understanding of the beautiful areas in the PNW.

I hope to learn more about art, languages, and the humanities. These are all things I've neglected in my pursuit of scientific training, and it would refreshing to discuss or enjoy such things with someone.
Also, I'm always willing to share, and learn, new ways to have a good time.
